Contact lenses — colored or not — can feel stressful the first time: which type to pick, the fear of touching your eye, not knowing how long to wear them, or how to clean the case properly.
Take a breath 😌 (just like wigs, this is a skill you pick up fast). This article is deliberately a big-picture overview: a living glossary to get you started with the right habits. Each topic will get its own dedicated (and more detailed) article, and you'll find every link here as the series comes out.
⚠️ One important thing before we start: a contact lens — even a colored one with no prescription — is a medical device placed directly on your eye. This article doesn't replace advice from an optician or an eye doctor, especially if this is your very first pair.

👀 The different types of cosplay contact lenses (at a glance)
90% of cosplayers pick their contacts based on color alone, without realizing that the type of lens completely changes the look, the comfort, and the impact on your vision. The 5 main families:
- Regular (natural pupil): cover only the iris, with a central opening to see through. Comfortable, easy to wear, beginner-friendly.
- Mesh/screen lenses: cover the iris and pupil with a fine grid pattern. Vision is reduced but still possible. Very striking effect.
- Full opaque (blackout) lenses: cover iris and pupil, fully opaque. Vision is heavily to completely blocked — occasional use only (photoshoot/video, with someone guiding you).
- Veiled (sheer) lenses: not to be confused with full opaque lenses — same coverage, but with a sheer layer that lets a bit of light through.
- Sclera lenses: cover the iris and the white of the eye, for a total effect. They come in different sizes and vision-opening diameters. They're harder to insert and less comfortable than smaller-diameter lenses.
On top of that, two more things matter across every type: the lens diameter and how opaque it needs to be for your natural eye color.

✋ Inserting and removing your lenses
To insert a lens, there are two methods:
- the finger method: one hand holds your upper eyelid up, the other pulls your lower eyelid down with the middle finger while the index finger places the lens directly on your eye
- the plunger (suction tool) method: you use a pair of silicone-tipped tweezers to pick up the lens without damaging it, plus a small suction-cup tool to gently place it. You then just position the lens on your eye without touching it with your finger.
To remove a lens, use the finger method or dedicated lens tweezers — never the suction tool.
⚠️ The suction tool is for insertion only. Used on removal, it can create a suction effect directly on the eye, which is risky: use lens tweezers instead.
✅ In every case:
- clean, dry hands before touching your lenses
- never force it if something stings or pulls unusually during insertion: take it out and rinse (always with lens solution, never with water)
- most beginners get the hang of it within a few days, sometimes a week — be patient

🧼 Cleaning and care: lenses, case, solution
Contact lens solution cleans, disinfects, hydrates, and stores your lenses. Change it:
- at least once a month, even if you're not wearing your lenses
- after every use
- before the very first use, to rinse off the storage liquid
☀️ The summer reflex: heat makes the liquid evaporate faster, and lenses without enough liquid get damaged. In summer, bump that up to 2–3 times a month to avoid dehydration.
For your lens case: clean it regularly with solution (never tap water), let it air-dry, and replace it regularly — even if you don't use it every time, leftover moisture is enough for bacteria to grow.
What if a lens dries out completely? We'll cover that in the dedicated article, but here's the key point already: a dried-out lens never gets its original properties back, even after soaking it in solution again.

Your cosplay should impress people. Not send you to the ER.
And to be clear: wearing contact lenses for cosplay is never a requirement. If you're not comfortable with the idea of touching your eye, or you'd rather skip it, your cosplay is just as valid without them. It's a choice, not a must-have.
If you do decide to go for it, whatever type of lens you choose, the same habits apply:
- ✔️ always wash your hands before handling them
- ✔️ use the right solution
- ✔️ respect the recommended wear time
- ✔️ never share your lenses
- ✔️ take a break if something feels off, never force it
