How do I put on a wig cap properly?
Start by flattening your hair (braid it in sections if it's long, to avoid any bumps), then pull the wig cap on from front to back, smoothing the surface as you go. How do I stop my wig from slipping?

My wig gives me a headache, why?
It's almost always down to over-tightening: it's tempting to pull the wig or the wig cap tighter to compensate for slipping. The fix isn't to tighten more, it's to add a non-slip headband that holds everything in place without extra pressure. If the discomfort continues after adjusting, reposition the wig rather than forcing it.
Care
Synthetic wig or human hair: is the care routine the same?
No. A synthetic wig needs less upkeep overall but is more sensitive to excess heat and repeated friction. A human hair wig looks more realistic but needs care closer to that of real hair (more frequent washing, dedicated products).
How do I wash a cosplay wig?
Detangle it dry before it gets wet (full method in our detangling guide): this stops knots from tightening once the fiber is damp. Then soak it in cool or lukewarm water with a mild wig-specific shampoo, or baby shampoo as a gentle alternative, without rubbing or twisting the fiber. Rinse, gently blot with a towel, then let it air-dry on a wig stand — never hang it any old way, or you'll warp the style. Once it's dry, brush through gently: washing helps detangling along, it doesn't replace it.
How often should I wash it?
Not after every wear. As a rule, washing every 5 to 10 wears is enough depending on how often you wear it and how much you sweat — washing too often wears out the fiber faster than dirt ever would.
How do I detangle it without damaging it?
Use a brush with soft, rounded bristle tips (an antistatic wig brush works great) or a wide-tooth comb — never a regular hairbrush. How long does a cosplay wig last?
With proper care (not over-washing, controlled heat, good storage), a good quality wig can last through several convention seasons. What wears it out fastest is excess heat and repeated friction, far more than time itself.

Can I style a cosplay wig with heat?

How do I stop overheating or itching under my wig?

Styling & cutting
Worth knowing before you start: synthetic fiber behaves like plastic, not like natural hair. It takes the shape you give it as it cools down, not as it heats up — so you need to hold the shape you want (a spike, a curl, a fold) while the fiber drops back to room temperature, or it'll spring back.
How do I make a spike on a wig?
The most reliable technique: backcomb the strand you're styling first to build volume and hold at the base, lightly smooth the surface with a comb without flattening all that volume, then heat the fiber (flat iron or hot air) while setting it in place with hairspray as you go. Finish by twisting the tip of the strand on itself to shape the point of the spike, and hold the shape until it's fully cooled before letting go — that's what locks it in. Heat-resistant fiber only. Can I cut a cosplay wig?
Yes, but always dry, strand by strand, and a little longer than your target length: synthetic fiber doesn't grow back, so it's safer to shorten it gradually than to cut too much at once. Use fine dedicated scissors rather than kitchen scissors.
Can I curl a cosplay wig?
On heat-resistant fiber (usually up to 180°C / 356°F), yes, with a curling iron or heated rollers — always test on a hidden strand first. The key move: hold the curled strand until it's fully cooled before letting go, since it's the cooling that locks in the shape, not the heat itself. On non-heat-resistant fiber, heat damages the strand permanently: check the product page before reaching for the iron.
Storage & transport
How do I store my wig between wears?
A wig stand is still the best option: it keeps the wig's shape and keeps it away from direct heat. If you don't have one handy, the original packaging is a solid backup: for a long wig, loosely braid it before putting it away to stop it tangling; for others, fold it neatly following its shape, with the tissue paper it came with tucked inside to keep the volume. Either way, avoid cramming it into a drawer unprotected — that creates creases that damage the style for good.
How do I transport it without damaging it (bag, convention)?
Use a dedicated cover or a foldable wig travel case rather than a plain bag: it protects the fiber from friction and crushing on the way, and it folds flat when empty. Ideally, detangle the wig before packing it to stop knots tightening in transit.
